I am so excited to be displaying my weavings at Studio 8  in Forest Park this Friday, October 19th . Melody and Bryan, the owners of Studio 8, have graciously let me take over some wall space and help me get the word out about my weavings. I had wanted to create a weaving using only rya knots. This was a technique that I've been interested in for a while, it creates such a beautiful texture. A friend of mine was having a birthday party and she wanted me to hang one of my weavings at her house so that I could get the word out that I'm creating these wall hangings and she thought her friends would be interested. I started the project with every intention of just hanging it on her wall and then adding it to my Etsy shop for sale. But as I continued to work on it, I realized how supportive this friend has been over the years and decided the weaving would be a birthday gift to her. Flossie Willy at the beach. Photo collage by me. People often ask me why I named my company Flossie Willy, well, here's why. First of all, I love the name, it has a sense of playfulness, it's rolls of the tongue, but the main reason is that Flossie Willy was my Great Grandmother, and yes that was her name. She grew up in eastern Tennessee, about 20 miles outside of Knoxville. She was a homemaker and a tailor. Her father had a business in downtown Clinton, called Taylor & Son that was a dry good store. The building is still standing and is now being used to house an antique store. You can still see the Taylor & Son on the building.
